Snus is a traditional Swedish tobacco product, enjoyed mainly in Northern Europe. Snus is also the only tobacco product which is banned throughout the internal market, with the exception of Sweden. For the majority of Swedish and non-Swedish snus users, the current EU ban is a mystery. How is it possible that the EU and its internal market, based on free trade and respect for the differences of our diverse cultures and traditions, ban snus, while other traditional tobacco products are perfectly legal?
The European Commission is now in the process of revising the Directive, which today denies European tobacco consumers the right to access snus should they want that. We believe it is time for European consumers to stand up for their right to benefit from the full benefits of the Internal Market and enjoy equal access to snus as other tobacco consumers have to their preferred product.
During the review process, it is possible for European citizens to have their say by taking part in the European Commission’s online public consultation, which you can do by clicking on European Commission’s public consultation on snus to the right. Answering the consultation only takes a few minutes, and it is a few minutes of your time well spent.
I would strongly encourage you to take the time to let the Commission know your opinion. However, if you feel that you do not have time to answer the Commission consultation but still want to show your support for better access of snus in the EU, please sign the petition on this site. We hope to collect many signatories and we will personally make sure that the Commissioner for Public Health, John Dalli and all his colleagues in the European Commission receives the petition.
